Installation, Care & Maintenance Guide
Installation, Care & Maintenance Guide
Proper installation and maintenance protect the look, performance, and longevity of your tile. Use the guidance below for ArtePierre materials: natural stone (marble, travertine, limestone, onyx), porcelain, ceramic, zellige, and glass.
Before You Install (All Materials)
- Inspect before installation: verify shade, finish, and any natural/handmade variation. Do not install material you are not comfortable with.
- Blend cartons: mix tile from multiple boxes or bundles to distribute variation evenly.
- Order extra: plan for cuts and waste (typically 10–15%; more for diagonal layouts, patterns, mosaics, and handmade tile).
- Use proper setting materials: choose mortar, grout, and waterproofing based on your substrate and application (wet areas, floors, exterior, etc.).
- Follow industry standards: installation should follow ANSI and TCNA guidelines and local building code requirements.
Natural Stone (Marble, Travertine, Limestone, Onyx)
- Sealing: many stones benefit from sealing—often before grout and again after installation. Sealer type and frequency depend on the stone, finish, and exposure (wet areas, kitchens, etc.).
- Setting & grout notes: use materials appropriate for natural stone. For light stones, use white thinset to reduce risk of discoloration.
- What to expect: natural veining, pits, mineral deposits, and shade variation are normal. Polished stone can show etching and wear faster in high-use areas.
- Cleaning: use pH-neutral stone cleaner only. Avoid vinegar, lemon, bleach, and acidic bathroom cleaners (these can etch marble/limestone and dull polish).
- Slip resistance: honed surfaces typically provide better slip resistance than polished surfaces.
Stone Resealing
Reseal as needed based on traffic and exposure. A common range is every 6–12 months in wet or high-use areas, and less often in low-use areas. Always follow the sealer manufacturer’s instructions.
Porcelain & Ceramic Tile
- Sealing: typically not required for the tile itself (some grouts may benefit from sealing depending on the product used).
- Great for wet/high-traffic areas: porcelain is especially dense and durable, making it ideal for floors, showers, and busy spaces.
- Cleaning: use a mild, non-abrasive cleaner. Avoid harsh abrasives that can scratch certain finishes.
Zellige (Handmade)
- Expect variation: handmade zellige can vary in size, thickness, shade, and surface texture. This is part of its character.
- Layout planning: dry-lay and sort pieces as you go. Blend across boxes for the most natural look.
- Grout joints: many installs use tight joints. Some styles use a wider joint for a more traditional look—choose what fits the design and installer recommendation.
- Edges & chipping: minor chipping and irregular edges may occur and are considered part of the aesthetic.
- Sealing: depending on the surface and application, sealing may be recommended—especially in wet or stain-prone areas.
Glass Tile
- Substrate matters: glass tile is sensitive to substrate and setting material choice. A smooth, properly prepared substrate helps achieve a consistent finish.
- Use the right mortar: glass often requires a manufacturer-approved thinset (commonly white) for best appearance and bond strength.
- Cleaning: use non-abrasive cleaners and soft cloths. Avoid scouring pads that can scratch or dull the surface.
Everyday Care (All Materials)
- Clean spills quickly—especially on natural stone.
- Use a soft microfiber cloth or non-scratch sponge.
- Avoid harsh chemicals and highly abrasive tools.
